If you would like to learn to sing or play flute, violin or piano or if you regret stopping lessons when you were younger, why not start lessons again?  Ruth teaches music from her studios in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Oxford and Bath

I have been teaching for over 30 years (& worldwide online for 8 years). I have examined for ABRSM and Guildhall, worked as an OfSTED inspector and taught in several top UK schools - for example Harrow, Sherborne, Simon Langton Girls School and Bedford. Currently I am tutoring students in Beijing, New York, London, Oxford, Nottingham and France.

Modern online learning can be very efficient and effective now that technology has improved and my students say they now prefer it to meeting up in person, especially as most are so busy. There are also digital performance examinations available now and these are extremely popular with my students.

Lessons are individually tailored to the student and I only take on up to 20 students per year so that I can focus on supporting them properly. Different teaching methods are utilised and matched to the student (not the other way round!). I teach older children (usually from age 12 upwards) and adults of any standard (beginners to diploma level). I specialise in adult returners.

I have a 100% pass rate and most students gain distinctions or merit in their examinations.

There are a few example lesson clips & demos on the Student page in the menu attached to this webpage and some additional demos available for public viewing on my Vimeo channel and my new YouTube channel. (please see Audio Visual page here)

After two years of piano lessons I would hesitate to call myself a Pianist but at 70 years old and with the memory bank nearly full what else can I expect! Thankfully I found a teacher who continues to demonstrate endless patience and gives tremendous support. Ruth spends a great deal of time outside the lessons devising various innovative teaching techniques to fit my needs. As a result l am slowly progressing and beginning to enjoy and understand both the theory and practical side of playing. I have observed that Ruth gives this same individual attention to other students. An example being that the very young boy whose lessons follows mine is given various exercises which involve a reference to his favourite ‘super hero’. I am pleased to have been asked to write this testimony as it goes some to expressing my appreciation for the continuing kindness, reassurance and support given over the past two years. Lynne

Ruth is an excellent teacher and creates rapport very quickly with students of all ages. She instinctively knows how to draw out their musical talents, using her varied and creative methods and an holistic approach to build confidence and skills. Her lessons are enjoyable, good humoured and concentrate on the positives whilst always remaining challenging. In 2.5 years of instruction, as an adult beginner, I have achieved 4 distinctions in theory and practical exams - something I could never have previously dreamed I would be capable of. Ruth has truly opened up the world of music to me and I know it will be a life long passion - I only wish I'd started years ago! I have every confidence she can do the same for you or your child. Hi Ruth, we hope you are well and looking forward to your summer break. We have missed you! Izzy has put together a little thank you for you. A caricature of you both playing her favourite piece of music, Skimbleshanks from Cats 🐈⬛ We hope you like it. Izzy has loved being taught by you over the last 7 years. Thank you for all that you have done. You are a wonderful teacher. We will be in touch if we decide to go ahead with piano but next year is GCSE year so we need to make a plan and think about how much free time we have. Have a lovely summer, take care xx Received via skype on 15th july 2024

My daughter has learning difficulties, and had no confidence. She has been learning violin online with Ruth for a year now. Her progress has been very impressive, from not knowing anything about a violin to passing her grade 3, with distinction in under a year. Ruth comes across as a very caring and passionate teacher. The way she puts methods across is fantastic. this is having a positive effect on our daughters progress in all areas. Angela
